2010 Spring Seminars
We are excited to present the following seminars this spring at Vite Greenhouses. Each seminar is FREE to attend. Signup is not mandatory but will help us have a feel for how much seating to provide.
- Vegetable Gardening; Saturday, April 24 @ 10 AM
Vegetable gardening is the hottest trend in gardening. People want to grow their own food to eat healthy and save money. Don and Vicky Gamble have been growing their own vegetables for over 30 years and selling them at the South Bend Farmers Market. They will share their knowledge of growing a good crop that you can enjoy from spring through fall. Topics will include soil preparation, plant timing, varieties to try, and some mouth watering recipes that will make you glad you grew it yourself.
- Eye-catching Containers; Saturday, May 1 @ 10 AM and 2 PM; Wednesday, May 5 @ 6pm
Creating your own container can bring summer-long enjoyment to your home and patio. We grow thousands of containers every year and we would like to share some of our knowledge so you can grow your own masterpiece. We will look at container types, plant characteristics, light requirements, watering and summer maintenance. Bring your own empty container, or purchase one from us for a seminar-only special price of 15% off the listed price. You can plant it in our planting area using the same growing mix we use, and your cost will simply be for the plants and materials you use.
- Herb Gardening; Saturday, May 15 @ 10 AM
Master Gardener Debbie DeShone is returning to Vite Greenhouses to present her popular seminar on herb gardening. Debbie has been growing and preparing herbs for over 25 years, and she will share her knowledge with you. She will talk about varieties of herbs, how to grow them and what you can do with herbs. She will also share some delicious recipes that will allow you to use herbs all year long.
- Native Plants; Saturday, May 22 @ 10 AM
Native perennials are an important part of our ecosystem. Learn what plants you can grow which are native to our zone and how they have a positive impact for the wildlife. Dennis Wentworth, a representative for some of our perennial plant suppliers, will lead this informative talk on these plants that will do well in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana.
- Beautiful Trees, Shrubs and Gardens 101; Saturday, May 29 @ 10 AM
We are very pleased to have a new friend of the greenhouses, Garry Roberson, give a presentation on some of the really exciting flowering trees and shrubs that present color and texture to any landscape. Garry is the Proprietor of Earth Art Garden Design & Rejuvenation in Mishawaka, IN, where he has promoted Mother Nature's "Green" ways for over 25 years. Garry distinguishes himself as a "Landscape Artist", and it won't take long for you to appreciate his enthusiasm and passion for properly designed landscapes. He'll also discuss some of the "Do's" and "Dont's" of appropriately designed spaces as he gives an overview of design methods. Garry will be happy to answer your plant, materials, or design questions.
